Face-To-Face With An Armed Criminal? What To Do

Decatur police provided these tips for citizens.

Because of the rash of major crimes this week (two carjacking and robberies), Patch asked the Decatur Police Department to provide tips for citizens who find themselves face-to-face with armed criminals.

Here's what Sgt. Jennifer Ross, the public information officer, sent:

  • If you realize you are being followed, call 911 if you have a cell phone and provide your location and updates to the operator as you continue to drive.Β
  • If you do not have a cell phone, continue to drive in populated areas with traffic and attempt to locate a police officer or police station.
  • Do not turn off or stop in unpopulated areas or side streets with no traffic.
  • If the other motorist is honking and trying to get you to stop, do not stop.
  • If you encounter an armed suspect demanding your vehicle or property, stay calm, do not make any sudden movements, do not resist, cooperate and once the suspects have left, call 911 immediately.Β
