City of Decatur's Population Grows by More Than 1,100; Avondale by 351

Since 2000 Census these two areas have grown

 More than 1,100 people moved into the City of Decatur over the last 10 years, according to figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Decatur’s population increased from 18,147 in 2000 to 19,335 in 2010, an increase of 1,188 people.

At the same time, Avondale Estates' population grew by 351 people over 10 years, from 2,609 in 2000 to 2,960 in 2010.

Both municipalities remain overwhelmingly Caucasian. Decatur is identified as having 14,215 white residents in 2010, compared to 11,906 in 2000. At the same time, the city's African-American population dropped from 2000 to 2010, from 5,532 to 3,910.

Decatur's Latino population doubled, however, from 304 in 2000 to 612 in 2010. And the city’s Asian population has increased, from 298 in 2000 to 564 in 2010.

In Avondale Estates, 2,394 residents are identified as white, with 428 African-Americans, an increase from 2000's figure of 225. The city's Latino population grew from 40 in 2000 to 64 in 2010.

While DeKalb County as a whole remains one of Georgia’s most populous counties, with 691,893 residents, its population grew at a much smaller rate than its metro Atlanta counterparts.

DeKalb’s population increased 3.9 percent from 2000, a slower rate than other metro Atlanta counties. Fulton's population grew from 816,006 people in 2000 to 920,581 in 2010, a growth rate of 12.8 percent, while Gwinnett grew from 558,448 people in 2000 to 805,321 in 2010, a growth of 36.9 percent. Finally, Cobb's population increased from 07,751 in 2000 to 688,078 in 2010, a growth of 13.2 percent.

DeKalb remains predominantly African-American, according to the new Census figures, with 375,725 blacks residing in the county. A total of 230,156 whites live in DeKalb, while 67,824 Latinos and 35,426 residents of Asian heritage are identified.

Georgia’s largest county is Fulton, with a population of 920,581. The other top metro Atlanta counties are Gwinnett, with a population of 805,321 (increase of 36.9 percent); and Cobb, 688,078 (increase of 13.2 percent).
