Decatur School Board Still Wants Bond Vote In 2013

Time is tight: The school board and Decatur City Commission are scheduled to meet Aug. 5 to talk about the bond referendum.

The Decatur School Board voted 5-0 on Tuesday night to move ahead with holding a $59.5 bond referendum on Nov. 5, rather than waiting until 2014.

The school board and Decatur City Commission will hold a joint work session Aug. 5 to talk about the referendum, board Chairman Marc Wisniewski said in a email.

The commission has the final say-so on whether the referendum goes on the ballot.

Superintendent Phyllis Edwards had told the board the city commission had to approve the referendum no later than Aug. 5 to provide time for filing legally required paperwork and legal advertisements.

Waiting until 2014 would provide more time to explain details of the bond referendum to the city and residents, she said.

The money will be used to renovate and enlarge Decatur High and Renfroe Middle schools, which expect their enrollment to double by 2018.
