Decatur Man Chases Burglars From House

Decatur police are investigating a rash of burglaries.


A Decatur man said he found burglars inside his home the night of June 24.

The resident of the 500 block of South Candler Street told police the sound of breaking glass woke him up. He walked out of the bedroom, looked toward the back door and saw two men inside the house and two outside.

The man said he ran towards the four males while screaming, "Get the hell out of my house." They fled and the man ran to the kitchen and got a knife.

He couldn’t provide a good description of the suspects but saw them drive away in a white Sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima or Hyundai.

The man stepped on some broken glass but said he didn’t need medical treatment. His sister was inside the house but slept through the incident.

Police are investigating 11 other burglaries that have occurred since June 17. Some were listed in a community alert police recently issued. This information comes from police reports.

200 block of East Lake Drive. On June 28, police went to a house under construction that had been burglarized through a north side window. Taken were an air conditioning condenser unit and numerous tools, including a paint sprayer and floor buffer, each valued at $1,200, and a nail gun worth $400.

300 block of Oakland Street. On June 26, a man called police to report that a neighbor’s basement door was ajar. Police found a shoe print on the door where it had been kicked in. Listing as missing were two flat-screen televisions, video game devices, a video camera and jewelry.

100 block of Avery Street. On June 26, a resident called police about a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood. He said he saw a silver Dodge Ram truck parked backward in a neighbor’s driveway and men removing packages from the front porch. Police arrived but didn’t find the truck. However, they found a door to the residence kicked open. Police contacted the residents, who were out of town, and determined that a laptop and some packages from on the front porch may have been stolen.

400 block of Ansley Street. On June 25, police went to a multi-family residence. Though no signs of forcible entry were found, three laptops and an iPad were reported missing.

700 block of East Ponce de Leon Ave. On June 24, a resident reported that three laptops had been stolen from his house. The house was occupied except from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. when he returned and discovered an opened bathroom window and a rear door unsecured.  The resident told police about an earlier incident in which he came home and found two juveniles inside the house; he called their parents but didn’t notify police.

100 block of Upland Road. On June 22, police went to a residence about 12:45 p.m. because of an alarm and found the front door off its hinges. The resident arrived a brief time later and said a television had been stolen.

100 block of Hill Street.  The resident told police she came home about 2:40 p.m. and found her front door forced open. A television, laptop and jewelry, including a $4,900 diamond bracelet, had been stolen.

700 block of Atlanta Avenue. On June 19, a resident said he left his apartment unsecured for about 20 minutes and returned to discover a .38-caliber revolver missing. He’d left it on top of his dresser.

200 block of Avery Street. On June 18, a resident reported that three televisions, three laptops, some jewelry and other items were stolen from his residence. The rear basement door was forced open.

300 block of Kirk Road. On June 18, a woman walking her dog called police after noticing a house door ajar. Police noticed the entertainment center was empty. They called the owner who said a 47-inch television should have been there.

200 block of East Davis Street. On June 17, a pet sitter called police and said she arrived at a house she is servicing and found the place in disarray. The pet sitter said the thinks a 60-inch television and an iMac were taken. Police found pry marks on a back door and window.
