Decatur Police To Meet Community Next Week

Police will talk about crime with the Oakhurst and Winnona Park neighborhood associations.

Decatur police will be getting an earful about the spate of brazen crimes next week in two meetings with community groups.

At 7 p.m. Monday, they'll attend the  Oakhurst Neighborhood Association meeting at the Solarium. This is a monthly meeting and police leaders usually attend to talk with residents.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, police will meet with the Winnona Park Neighborhood Association at the Decatur Recreation Center at 231 Sycamore Street. This meeting was scheduled before the recent spate of robberies.

The crime wave has thrown a scare into Decatur, which hasn't experienced a large number of major crimes in recent years. This is what happened:

Wednesday. A woman was carjacked on Swanton Way. Police chased the vehicle, which wrecked on South Candler Street. A 15-year-old was charged.

Tuesday. Three women were robbed, one at gunpoint, in the playground at Oakhurst Park.

Monday. A man in Oakhurst was approached by two young men who tried to steal his laptop. He fought back.

Other  incidents near Decatur may be related.

On Tuesday night, a woman was shot to death in a home invasion robbery in East Atlanta. Also Tuesday, a woman in Gilliam Park in Kirkwood was shot when while being robbed of her cell phone.

Decatur has also experienced a large number of residential burglaries, including one in which a man woke up to find intruders inside his house.

Several months ago, a handful of pedestrians were robbed on the street. A group of armed men entered Wahoo! Restaurant after closing and stole tip money and liquor.
