Thank you Ralph! We are mostly concerned that a big-box store simply isn't the right fit for this densely populated and historic part of Decatur. Even though this is still Dekalb county zoning, we think that following the city of Decatur model would be a better blueprint for smart growth. And there's another new (2008) Walmart less than 4 miles away, in Avondale on Memorial Drive.

Walmart often gives philanthropically to buy their way into a community. Have you been over to the super-store? There is only a tattoo parlor and a beauty supply store adjacent to the property. The entire area continues to be in a slump and the Walmart there has increased crime, according to neighbors who live in the vicinity. While local business coming in is encouraging, it may be due more to the recovering economy than to the fact that a Walmart is there. I'd like to know the origin of that 'stimulus'. By the way, prices at this particular Walmart are no longer competitive. In my comparison shopping, I found that Kroger had cheaper produce and at least carries organics. This Walmart had none at all - I asked. The Walmart also promised mixed-use (apartments) and that concession was later reneged on.
