5 Things to Know Today: July 16, 2012

Animal advocates will rally on the square. An author will talk about a momentous event from the Sixties -- the Orly air crash.

Good morning, Decatur and Avondale Estates. Here are 5 Things you need to know about today.

1. Weather. High temps in the lower 90s, lows around 72, 40 percent chance of rain during the day, 20 percent at night. It'll be like this all week.

2. Animal lovers. Advocates for DeKalb Animals will rally at 11 a.m. on the Decatur Court Square, then walk to the office of DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis. They want improvements at the county animal shelter.

3. Band camp: The Decatur High band is going through a week of intensive practice to prepare for the coming school year. Band members checked into Oxford College Sunday and will come home Friday.

4. Remembering the Orly crash. A 1962 air crash at the airport near Paris killed 130 people, many of them important cultural and civic leaders in Atlanta. Author Ann Uhry Abrams will discuss her book, ”Explosion at Orly: The Disaster That Transformed Atlanta” at 7:15 p.m. at the Decatur Library.  Free

5. Public meetings: Decatur City Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. at Decatur City Hall. Avondale Estates City Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. in Avondale Estates City Hall. The Avondale Estates Planning and Zoning Board meeting has been cancelled.
