What Should Go Here? The Old Carpe Diem

The popular restaurant near the Ice House Lofts closed back in December.

Many loyal customers were upset when Carpe Diem restaurant closed in December.

Blogger Chris Callahan and his wife held their wedding reception at the restaurant next to the Ice House Lofts. He wrote that "Carpe Diem was a special place, I think.  It captured the spirit of Decatur – the kindness, the acceptance, the style, the 'chill-ness' that, I fear, is on the wane."

The building at 105 Sycamore Place, Decatur, is still empty.

What would you like to see move into the spot? It doesn't have to be a restaurant.

The Courtyard has plenty of space and the Old Courthouse is quite nice. The City shouldn't be in the "event facility" business anyway.

So, Steve, what is the purpose of "Civic Centers"? Last time I checked, the Courthouse charged $1,500/day and that was years ago and you're right, it is nice. Next time you have an event and want it in Decatur, rent it. BTW, comparing the Courtyard and the "Old Ice House" is like comparing apples and oranges.

Not enough parking for an "event facility"; It's a large space, but setting it aside for events would be a bummer since it's got about the best patio space around and folks are waiting for something to open so they can get back to their fav patio. It could easily house two complimentary businesses due to layout and size. Just off the top of my head..... wine bar / coffee & books; microbrewery restaurant like Twains, BSP w/ room for pool tables; wellness/yoga/juice bar; I like the art supply idea if you combined another business like painting classes with byob plus a coffee shop -- very cool.

What makes you think that a City owned facility would cost less? The Courthouse is operated by the nonprofit DeKalb History Center and they charge the going rate.

We don't need any more coffee shops, book shops, Twain's copies, pool halls, yoga spots. Oh yeah and yogurt shops. We need a live music venue. Eddie's Attic is it... Sitting quietly and listening to singer/song writers of a certain genre is great every once in awhile but we need a real live music spot where all kinds of bands can play.
