What's Open, Closed on MLK Day?

Schools and government offices will close, but almost all businesses will operate as usual.

Monday, January 21, is a federal, state and local holiday honoring the birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

King’s actual birthday was Tuesday, Jan. 15--he would have been 84 this year--but the official holiday is always celebrated on the third Monday of January.

Here's what's closed on the holiday.

City of Decatur, DeKalb County Schools and private schools. Classes resume Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Decatur and Avondale Estates City Hall, DeKalb County government offices and all state and federal offices. They reopen Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Trash pickup that normally occurs Monday will happen Tuesday or Wednesday.

Almost all banks.

Post offices.

Public libraries.

Here's what's open.

Most businesses, including retailers, pharmacies, car dealerships, restaurants, car washes and movie theaters. Call ahead to be sure.

Marta service will operate on a Saturday schedule.
