More Anti-Walmart Rallies Coming

Good Growth DeKalb will stage protests near Suburban Plaza.

The group opposing developers' plans to build a Walmart at will take it to the streets this summer.

says members will stand at intersections near the shopping center with signs during the evening rush hour on June 8, July 13 and Aug. 13. They encourage people to honk if they support their cause.

Protesters, Good Growth DeKalb says in an email, should "Wear a bright yellow T-shirt. If you don’t have one now, consider picking one up at Last Chance Thrift Store at Suburban Plaza. We'll also have a few on hand for you to borrow."

.

The group opposes construction of a Super Walmart at Suburban Plaza, located just outside the Decatur city limits, saying the store would create traffic problems and generally wouldn't be a good fit for the neighborhood.

Do you think these street protests are effective? Give you answer in the comments below.

The comments about morbidly obese are tasteless. They don't reflect well on the Wal-Mart haters.

Was that serious or an attempt at humor?

Agree - tasteless and baseless arguments!

For taxus and mark and anyone else whose satiric compass is off a little: Fun is had with just about any subject or human condition, yes even Hitler (Eric Idle's "Spamalot," for instance). Wealth and weight are no different. But what makes it funny, and not simply ignorant and bigoted as some of the comments above appear to be, is often, though not always, that the comedian pokes fun at a group that is perceived to be disadvantaged/ridiculed AND he/she is a member of that group, i.e self-deprecation. Dave Chappelle is a good example. If I, as a middle-aged white male, had created his jokes and skits, I would be in some deep hoo-hoo. Double standard? Yes, there is. But there is some individual responsibility to know the difference. I assume, of course, that neither of you have +40% body fat nor do you have a family income around $25,000 per year, or both. Cuz that just ain't funny.
