House Hunt: The Blue Period

Each week we showcase area homes for sale that are worth looking at -- or strolling through.

This week I have my eye on houses with the blues -- well, just blue parts. Sounds better the other way, though.

Color is transitory in real estate, of course. Do you like everything about a property except its particular shade of (insert your own least favorite here)? Paint! Does another place already have your own come-hither tone brightening (or, in rare instances, darkening) its walls? Bonus!

Reportedly, an art collector and designer gave 721 Clairemont Ave. its heavenly blues. Although the home has a white exterior with plum trim, the interior has at least four spaces with striking blue surfaces. One is a sitting room whose brick fireplace is framed by an electric-blue mantle and by walls with an almost stippled blue finish. Another is a wood-paneled living room whose blue walls have been glazed with white and whose window frames are done in midnight blue.

Two bathrooms at 721 are also part of the home's blue period: One of its four bathrooms has bright blue wainscot, and another has a shower with marine blue tiles. The home has four bedrooms and a terrace-level room with exposed granite walls. That downstairs area also has pantry doors made from repurposed wainscotting that used to be in the kitchen.

What looks like a robin's egg blue adorns the shingles covering 237 Derrydown Way in Decatur. The home has four bedrooms and three bathrooms; an attached, two-car garage separated from the living space by a breezeway; and a mix of hardwood and carpeted floors. Overall, the home integrates energy-efficiency components, including its roofing and window panes.

No. 237 seems to have only a bit of interior blue, but it's spectacular: The backsplash in the kitchen comprises ceramic tiles in aqua and indigo. That roomy, well-lit kitchen also includes a plumbed island and dual main sinks. The master bathroom also has some a noteworthy plumbing in the form of a multihead shower system.
