House Hunt: Earthy Interiors

Each week we showcase area homes for sale that are worth looking at -- or strolling through.

Autumn might be to blame, as it lays multicolored carpets of leaves outside that are never the same twice. Whatever the reason, this week my eyes are on earth tones -- indoor ones.

An Avondale Estates home, 462 Wilfawn Way, has mahogany-colored shutters framing its front windows. Those decorative shutters hint at the color scheme within. This home, one of 40 in the Village at Avondale development, has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and six fireplaces.

Paint on the walls inside No. 462 is sandy, pearly gray, or taupe, for the most part. Tile the shade of straw covers the kitchen floor and lightens up the cherrywood cabinetry, which wears a rich, dark stain dubbed "espresso." Dark wood also shows up as flooring in the dining room, whereas buff-colored carpeting is underfoot in the bedrooms. Honey-colored tile coats the lower portions of what looks like the master bath, and tile in another bathroom recapitulates it all: A wall above a tub quilts together just about every color already noted, plus a subdued gray-green.

A Decatur home, 543 E Lake Drive, has a palette in a somewhat sunnier range than the aforementioned property. Here, the kitchen cabinets are redder (though still dark), the hardwood floors are more blond, and some walls bear paint that might be some breed of yellow. No. 543 has five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a separate two-car garage.

This Oakhurst home also employs a noteworthy green, but subdued it's not: One of the bedrooms is painted an electric chartreuse that might occur in nature. Maybe. Certainly, though, No. 543 has a house-wide, covered front porch and a substantial deck out back, from either of which one might admire the earth tones of the great outdoors whenever the ones inside are simply not enough.

(Please note that all property details, including pricing, are confirmed as of press time but are also subject to change.)
