Good Growth DeKalb: County Has Issued Walmart Permit

The anti-Walmart group says it has 30 days to file a lawsuit.

Good Growth DeKalb, the North Decatur group fighting the construction of a Walmart Supercenter in Suburban Plaza, says a lawsuit to stop the international retailer is imminent after the shopping center's owners were granted a permit last week to begin construction.

"DeKalb County finally granted Selig Enterprises their first permit (for land disturbance) this past week," the group wrote in an email to supporters. "This means that we have 30 days to take legal action."

Suburban Plaza is an aging shopping center located just outside the Decatur city limits. It's one of the areas Decatur is considering for anexation.

The group has said for months on its website that its lawyers, hired in February, have identified an issue in the development plans to challenge legally. They have not clarified that publicly, however, saying only on their site: "In the face of the county’s antiquated zoning laws, which date from the 1950s and give free range to developers, this is a huge piece of news."

The group plans to protest the construction again in front of the shopping center at the intersection of Scott Boulevard, North Decatur Road and Medlock Road from 4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. Friday, according to the email.

The Walmart Supercenter is part of a larger renovation of the aging Suburban Plaza. Selig Enterprises, the shopping center's owners, have said the Walmart is critical to luring strong brands to revitalize the plaza.

Nope, I do not believe that a lawsuit will stop Walmart from coming to Suburban Plaza.

Yes, I think it will clarify the traffic and parking issues there. The traffic is too congested and some of the streets have been worked on, yet there are still large pot holes and not enough lanes.

Traffic volume is not part of the permitting and code compliance process. They'll have to find another argument. And, street maintenance has absolutely nothing to do with this issue.

I saw a lady interviewed on the local news about walmart and she said "we don't want your kind here and your cheap prices". I have to live next to these jerks! Have these protesters/bored housewives noticed the thrift shop there? Have they noticed the loss of Picadilly and 4 other types of business? I was told they don't want traffic in their neighborhood...well they certainly drive through other neighborhoods. Stop Walmart? No...GO Walmart!

Traffic will be such a mess. This will effectively STOP people from going to all the great restaurants in Emory & Decatur from the northern side of Claremont Rd. Big, big mistake to build a Walmart there.

Pricing on all of Walmart's products threatens every small business because of the way they buy in such great volume. 85% or more of their inventory comes from China. However, the thrift shop is privately owned, and the reason that other businesses have left is because Selig wants the space for the Walmart superstore, not because people don't want them in that location. Big Buy was the highest producing store of its brand in the Atlanta area. So that proves wrong the idea that people weren't coming to shop at the Plaza. Selig allowed the attrition by renting month to month to its vendors. This just in - Great news about Athens, no more Walmart.
