Ga. Car Repair Bills Among Highest In U.S.

Do you think your local auto repair shop is treating you fairly?

Do you feel overcharged when your car is repaired?

If yes, you're not alone. The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that

Car repair bills for Peach State drivers were among the highest in the nation last year, according to an Irvine, Calif.-based CarMD.com study of more than 160,000 repairs.

Georgia had the ninth highest average car repair cost at $350.66 ($116.08 average labor and $234.58 average parts cost).

The most expensive state for car repairs last year was Wyoming, where the average bill ran up to $389.18. The cheapest state was Indiana, with an average repair bill of $283.95.

Do auto mechanics in the Decatur and Avondale Estates area charge fairly? Can you make a recommendation?

I can since I have lived in Decatur my entire life and based on my experience. When we had locally run community service stations we had honest mechanics and people that knew you by name and you trusted them. When we lost those stations in the 70's and 80's we started to get the big name service stations coming in and in my opinion an opportunity to get ripped off...and I did get ripped off just like others did. That is why a few of us last year saw a great opportunity in starting the Decatur Pure Station....full service gas like the old days and people you can trust when it comes to car service. I think based on the feedback from the community we are doing what we set out to do and I hope we can keep doing it for years to come...Scott Drake

Average auto repair costs should almost be the same across the entire country. The only variables with respect to repair cost are the difference in hourly rate each auto repair shop charges and how much they mark up their parts. There are standard guides that are not available to the public which say how many labors hours each repair should take and how much parts should costs. These variables should even out based on this information, but it doesn't. This article should be retitled State by State rankings on how much they overcharge you on repairs. To avoid this I have www.repair-smart.com They have access to these standard guides and use that information to make sure you only pay for what is fair and proper.
