Owen Launches New Venture Friday

This is a big week for Eddie Owen, who is now managing and booking for two venus: Eddie's Attic in Decatur and the Red Clay Theatre in Duluth.

Eddie Owen, the namesake of Decatur folk club , will use a little help from his friends this week.

The first concerts by “Eddie Owen Presents” at the Red Clay Theatre in Duluth Dec. 2 and 3 will feature Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers.

Hood and Owen have known each other for years. Hood won an open mic competitions in the 1990s at Eddie's Attic and was encouraged by Owen, according to a Sunday Atlanta Journal-Constitution story.

The second show in Duluth will be Ed Roland of Collective Soul, who told the AJC about knowing and admiring Owen, the high school quarterback, while growing up in Henry County.

“Ed was my hero back then,” Roland said. “I remember throwing a football with him at a church retreat when I was kid, and I was like ‘Man! I’m out here with Eddie Owen.’ ”

Those connections make Owen an important man in the Georgia music scene.

His continued involvement with Eddie's Attic didn't look likely in early October, at the Red Clay Theatre.

It turns out he'll handle management and booking for both venues. Alex Cooley, co-creator of Music Midtown, and his business partner, Dave Mattingly, will provide financial backing. And on Dec. 1, Cooley and Mattingly will buy Eddie's Attic.

Owen founded the club in 1992, sold it and managed it under Bob Ephlin, who is selling to Cooley and Mattingly. Owen and Eddie’s Attic have been credited with launching the careers of the Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins, John Mayer, Sugarland, and the Zack Brown Band.
