Decatur Showcases Restaurants in New Initiative

Looking to highlight its plethora of culinary offerings, Decatur has launched a new website to focus on its restaurants.

The site, DecaturRestaurant-Tour.com, feature portions of video interviews with the restaurateurs behind some of the city's most popular eateries – Leon's, Café Alsace and the Iberian Pig, among them — to give folks a little insight into the personalities behind the plates.

Chef Mary Moore, owner of the Cook's Warehouse retail chain, spoke to six of the city's leading restaurateurs in the first phase of the initiative.

While they give insight into a collection of restaurants that helped Decatur cement its place as foodie hotspot, they also underscore the importance of a strong, local economy, Moore said.

The effort coincides with American Express Co.'s Small Business Saturday initiative, which also encourages consumers to support local, independent, mom-n-pop stores on Nov. 30.

Indeed, Decatur has pushed its 'Keep it Indie-Catur" campaign, a nod to the city's mostly independently- and locally-owned shops and importance of keeping dollars spent on goods and services circulating in the local economy.

It's no wonder. Decatur's median household income is $73,602, compared with $49,736 statewide, U.S. Census Department figures show.

Decatur-Avondale Estates Patch met with Moore recently to discuss the restaurant tour initiative and how those efforts support the local economy. Please click on our video to hear portions of the interview.
