Bike Shop Opens in Avondale Estates

Avondale Cycles sells mostly used and vintage bicycles.

If you have a limited budget but need a bike, consider Avondale Cycles.

Benjamin Stimis said 80 percent of his bikes are used or vintage models, many from the 1980s. He purchases used bikes in bulk and Johnny Turner cleans them up and puts them into running condition.

About three-quarters of his customers are young women who just need two-wheel transportation, with many hailing from Oakhurst, he said. Men, on the other hand, usually want more mechanically sophisticated bikes.

The average price for a used bike is around $150 though some cost several hundred dollars more. He carries one-gear cruisers -- a big favorite during beach season -- but also offers models such as a 1982 Peugot road bike for $299.

Stimis, 38, grew up in France and biked seriously in his younger days. He moved to the United States about 10 years ago.

The bike shop is easy to miss. It's right next to , which Stimis purchased earlier this year. That shop sells Costco overruns. In May he put a few bicycles in front of the store.

"I started with a few bicycles -- four or five -- and they sold in three or four days," he said. "So I got more."

He said the shop sold about 400 bikes from May to the present. Now he carries about 50 bikes in all sizes, including starter bikes for little kids.
