10 Dos and Don'ts For a Job Interview

What not to do (and wear) when you need a job.

I was all set to write a article about how we make decisions to do business with a certain company and do we base our decisions on how a store front looks, past experiences, price, level of service, etc. Well, that can wait until next time because what I am currently seeing and experiencing is mind blowing to me.

As I write this, I am at a local establishment that I frequent regularly. Across the room, a manager is in the process of interviewing a person for a part-time summer position and I am amazed at what I am seeing. The prospective employee is wearing what looks to be a cover up for the pool and flip flops! Along with that, her personal undergarments are more than apparent as she is wearing a sleeveless top.

How can you walk into a interview wearing flip flops and expect good things to happen? What is with the pool cover up? The pools are not open yet and I really think that the bra that she is sporting is not really in good taste either.

People, let's get a grip on what is and is not appropriate for a job interview. Now granted, if we were talking about a lifeguard job or something along those lines, maybe I could let it slide, but we are at a local restaurant and you are interviewing for a waitress position. Overhearing the conversation, I understand that you are looking for part-time summer work but a little discretion please.

So here is my quick list of dos and don'ts for a job interview:

  1. Don't show up late. If you can't make it to the interview on time, what are the chances you are going to be on time once you get the job?
  2. Don't wear inappropriate clothing. Dress to impress.
  3. Gum is a no no. Also, chewing tobacco is not going to go over well either.
  4. Don't tell me about how terrible your last boss was. There is always something nice to say.
  5. Make sure your resume is updated. You do have a resume correct?
  6. Dress like you are interviewing for your dream job even if it is not. Men: coat and tie is required. Ladies, a nice business suit will make a good impression.
  7. Show up five minutes early and let me know that you are here and ready to meet with me.
  8. Tell me the truth. Typically I can tell if you are not being honest and I know a "Line".
  9. Yes and No answers really will not impress me so expand on things for me.
  10. The first question you ask should not be "How much do I get paid?" or "When do I get vacation time?"

Finally, go out there and help someone else do something they could not do for themselves today and see where that gets you
