5 Things To Know About the First Day of Decatur Schools

Kids in the City Schools of Decatur return to classes on Thursday, Aug. 1.

Students in the City Schools of Decatur will meet their teachers on Wednesday and start classes on Thursday. Here are five things to know about the new school year.

1. Buses. After contracting with DeKalb County for a decade, Decatur schools will operate their own bus fleet this year.

2. Enrollment. Administrators expect about 4,000 students the first day--a 10 percent increase over last year.

3. Construction. The expansion is finished at Oakhurst Elementary and the trailers are gone.

4. Tuition students. Because of surging enrollment, the system is not accepting any new tuition students this school year.

5. Upcoming holidays. Labor Day on Sept. 2. Fall break Sept. 9-13. Thanksgiving break Nov. 25-29. Winter holiday break Dec. 23-Jan. 1.
