Write A Movie Mini-Review

Did you see a movie this weekend? Tell us if you liked it or not.

Decatur Patch is trying something new. If you saw a movie recenty, give us a mini-review. It doesn't have to be a full-fledged review, but if you want to write one, let it flow.

I'll start. I saw "Beasts of the Southern Wild" on Saturday and couldn't wait for it to end.

It's a raw, almost-plotless story about a small group of people living in squalor in The Bathtub, a little community cut off from the rest of New Orleans by a levee. Told through the eyes of a little girl named Hushpuppy, the story blurs the line between fantasy and hard-edge realty. The overarching mood is anxiety.

Sounds arty, right? For me, it was a beautiful bummer. I wish I spent my ten bucks on another movie.

Have you seen a movie lately? Share your thoughts in the comments box below.

This movie, starring non-actors (the male lead is a baker) is about folks who are way, way off the grid. But the message is straight on. Even the poorest, most dysfunctional people do have loyalties, a will to survive and strong community spirit. And the most well-meaning "rescue" can feel like imprisonment. These are not pretty images, but I am still awash in their starkness. I salute Hushpuppy and all kids who fall between the cracks. From now on, I'll ask, "What would Hushpuppy do?"

Thanks, Barbara. Good perspective.
