Weekend Planner: Start by Running With the Dogs

You can also enjoy improv at the Academy Theatre, an organizing class at Finders Keepers, poetry at the Wylde Center and an African-American history museum at North DeKalb Mall.

There's plenty to do around Decatur and Avondale Estates this weekend. Here are five possibilities, but for more ideas see the full Events listing.

1. Run with the Dogs 5K Run/Walk. This annual run/walk starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at Decatur High. Bring your favorite canine running partner if you wish. Proceeds benefit the Decatur High and Renfroe Middle schools athletic programs. $25.

2. Improv for the afterlife. The Academy Theatre says, "A cast member will see their life reviewed as the audience provides suggestions and votes on what will happen to them in the afterlife! This show is for teenagers and up!" 8 p.m. Saturday at the Academy Theatre. $13 admission.

3. Get organized. Finders Keepers consignment shop sponsors this workshop at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the store at 2753 E College Ave. in Avondale Estates. Admission is one can of food per participant to be donated to the Atlanta Food Bank.

4. Earth Poetry with Stephen Wing. This quarterly event at the Oakhurst Community Garden of the Wylde Center celebrates the natural world through verse. Bring poetry to share, either your own or a favorite poet's. Register in advance by emailing  andrea.zoppo@yahoo.com. Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday with a suggested $5 donation.

5. African-American History Museum. The Free Sights and Sounds Black Cultural Expo is on tour with over 8,000 artifacts in the Macy's wing at North DeKalb Mall. Free, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
