Major landscaping improvements are taking shape as work is now underway at the gateway to the Stone Mountain Community Improvement District (CID).

DeKalb County-contracted crews are in the early stages of installing new landscaping, signage and other elements at the interchange of Highway 78 and Mountain Industrial Boulevard.

The interchange upgrade is made possible through a public-private partnership between the CID and DeKalb County. This is the only such beautification effort underway in DeKalb benefitting from significant contributions from local businesses.

CID planning experts conducted pre-construction meetings with the county, its contractors and the Georgia Department of Transportation to identify key changes to produce an enhanced project when finished, said CID President Emory Morsberger.

“We are very appreciative that those creating the landscape plans accepted our recommendations,” Morsberger said. “DeKalb County is taking many of our ideas and employing them as they complete other planned interchange improvements.”

Beyond the county’s cost for materials and labor, the CID is contributing $7,000 for removing old turf to accommodate greater durability and ease of maintenance. Additionally, the CID is transporting county-supplied top soil/composting materials necessary to enhance the soil profile to give the plant material the best soil.

When the project is fully complete, the CID has agreed to take responsibility for the maintenance of the interchange enhancements. This upkeep will begin once the one-year warranty has expired for materials installed by the contractors.

Plant materials will be installed in late April, weather permitting. The entire project should be complete before the month ends.

This will make the area look much better. A challenge here is to better educate the community about what a CID is, and what role it can play. It's not in the vocab of the average person, but can play a big role in having a good business community where people want to spend time purchasing things.
