Introducing: Pets and Peeps

This is a new feature in Decatur Patch about pets and their people.

Decatur and Avondale Estates are pet-loving towns.

Whenever I walk my dog, I meet somebody else doing the same. I usually chat with the owner while the dogs sniff each other out. I've gotten to know some cat owners, too. I always remember the pets better than the people.

To glorify this world of pets, I'm going to kick off this new Decatur Patch feature, Pets and Peeps, by telling you about my own favorite dog.

Pet's name, breed and age: Laney Puckett was born June 21, 2003. She's a greyhound and her track name was Reba's In Front. She never made it as a racer, though. We discovered this by looking up her bloodlines on the internet, using the ear tattoos that breeders give greyhound pups. Her three sisters, however, all raced competitively.

Nicknames: Lanky. Wanky Tank. Peanut. Snoookums. Sugar Doodle.

How I met my pet: I started dating a greyhound owner six years ago and married her in 2009. Susan got Laney from Adopt A Greyhound in Stone Mountain, the same place she got her two previous greyhounds, Sabrina and Della.

How my pet has enriched my life: Laney has taught me that greyhounds are the supermodels of the canine world. She's also the perfect scapegoat, allowing conflict to be peacefully resolved in our household. Real conversation. My wife: "Who drank the last beer?" Me: "It was Laney!" My wife, hands on hips: "Layneeee ... " Laney wags her tail, happy for the attention.

If my pet could talk he or she might say:
That was the best treat ever. Now for a nap.

I'd like to know about your dog, cat, snake, lizard, monkey, llama -- whatever kind of pet you have. Just answer the questions above and email the information along with a photo of you and your pet (or pets) to Ralph.Ellis@Patch.com.
