As Christians worldwide celebrate the Easter holiday weekend, the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta is looking ahead to Holocaust Remembrance Day.

In conjunction with the Atlanta Rabbinical Association, the MJCCA will hold a community-wide Yom HaShoah commemoration from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 27 at the Besser Holocast Memorial Garden, 5342 Tilly Mill Road in Dunwoody.

Longtime Atlanta resident and Holocaust survivor Abe Besser and his wife, Marlene Besser, built the garden, and each year the MJCCA hosts the ceremony to honor the six million Jews who died during the Holocaust.

At the event Atlanta native Jim Barfield, whose relatives had perished in the Holocaust, will speak, and the Israel consulate to the Southeast and the German consulate general to the Southeast will greet guests. There will be a special music performance as well, the event description says, and six torches will be lit in honor those who fell.

According to the MJCCA website: "In Israel, a morning siren sounds, stopping all activity; people stand in honor of those who died. Jews around the world hold memorials and vigils, often lighting six candles in honor of the six million Holocaust victims."
