Meet Whiz Kid: Hannah Lefton

Decatur High School student "wows" in mock trial competition

Name: Hannah Lefton, 18

School:

Accomplishments: This Decatur High School senior recently won two “outstanding attorney” awards during the Georgia High School Regional and State Mock Trial competitions. Students compete in real courtrooms where professional attorneys and judges participate and teams are evaluated on their ability to make logical, persuasive presentations. “Hannah probably knows and understands the federal rules of evidence, which are used in the high school mock trial program, better than many attorneys in Georgia,” said Jodi Dick  a criminal defense attorney and one of Hannah's coaches. “She is a quick thinker and is able to articulate her position clearly and effectively," she said, adding that the opening statement was delivered flawlessly in each round. In the final round of the regional competition, the judge for the round (who is a prosecutor in Georgia) commented to Dick, “Wow!” Hannah began participating in the program as a freshman timekeeper and advanced to lead defense attorney. Currently she has early admittance to the honor program at the University of Georgia and is considering several other colleges where she will study either chemistry or pre-law. She runs on the cross country team, plays the saxophone in the marching band and is taking harp lessons. She also enjoys service projects with her church youth group such as Art with Heart.
