Adoptable Amelia

Amelia is a cat with a sweet personality and a secret love for another species

Walk in the door at LifeLine Animal Project in Avondale Estates and it’s a just few short steps to their Kitty Motel. Step into the Kitty Motel and you might feel more popular than ever, as a wave of cats and kittens roll up to greet you.

Taylor the cat will try to take your pen if you are bold enough to think that working or making notes is more important than paying attention to her. Pugsley and Wednesday will saunter up and coyly demand your time. Donna the tabby calico expects to be petted. Two hands don't seem enough to keep everyone happy.

The younger cats romp and run, vying for attention from staff or volunteers. The adult cats cast a cool eye your way when you come in, sizing you up, sometimes rubbing against you as you pass by their perch. Occasionally a paw might reach out to touch your hair.

LifeLine’s Kitty Motel is a room where healthy adoptable kittens and cats live and roam. They are able to play and interact with each other and potential adopters. It’s less stressful for cats than living isolated and locked in cages.

The room is decorated in muted colors with shelves, perches, cat beds and toys everywhere.

It’s so easy to have fun with the playful, demanding kittens there that it's just as easy to overlook the tortoiseshell cat with the beautiful coat and serious eyes sitting on a shelf calmly watching the action.

That cat is Amelia and she’s been a shelter cat almost her entire 3-year-old life.

Tortoiseshell cats (“Torties” to cat lovers) have unusual coloring and more often than not are females. The bridled mixture of a black, brown, red or blue and sometimes orange or cream coat make them look like more like an exotic animal than a common cat.

Amelia’s coloring is not the only thing unusual about her. She’s absolutely crazy about dogs.

“She likes to clean them and then nibble on them,” says Mickie Blair, LifeLine’s field coordinator and cat adoption counselor. “She’s never met a dog she didn’t like.”

Amelia came to LifeLine by way of Spalding Animal Control. As a result of living so much time in shelters, she’s rather shy at first and doesn’t run up to visitors but prefers to hang back and see who will approach her. This means she is often overlooked by people looking to adopt. They don't always notice the "wallflower" cats.

Given a bit of time, she relaxes and very much enjoys giving and getting affection.

Amelia is loyal, calm and the perfect companion cat for a household that is as laid-back as she is. She gets along very well with other cats.

Amelia is spayed and has had all her shots. She’s healthy and is just waiting for a home and family, perhaps one that includes another cat for company or a dog who needs to be nibbled on.
