5 Things to Know Today: June 22, 2012

It's Take Your Dog to Work Day. Also, here's a deal if you're adopting a pet.

This is Take Your Dog to Work Day. This annual event was created to celebrate dogs and encourage more canine adoptions.

In that vein, Patch would like to remind readers that Avondale Veterinary Hospital shelter, pound, PAWS or other adoption center. The vet will also check for intestinal parasites.

If you're a political animal, make room on your calendar for David Maraniss, author of the soon-to-be-released biography “Barack Obama: The Story.” He will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, in Gaines Chapel at Agnes Scott College. He also wrote a highly regarded bio of Bill Clinton. It's free.

Mommy and Me or Daddy and Me Hours are offered Fridays at McKoy Pool. No children over the age of 5 are allowed in the pool at this time. Toys and activities will be provided for the children.

Thinking of a low-key weekend? Visit Woodlands Garden from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 24, to enjoy the flowers and listen to the Unusual Suspects play original and traditional bluegrass and folk in the Pavilion. It's free. The garden is at 932 Scott Blvd., Decatur.
