Tickets for AJC Decatur Book Festival’s Keynote and Kidnote Addresses available Aug. 5

The 2013 Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical (AJC DBF) will release the 2013 Keynote and Kidnote Address tickets for sale on Monday, Aug. 5, at 10 a.m.Congressman John Lewis will give the Keynote Address on Friday, Aug. 30, at 8 p.m. at Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts (1700 N. Decatur Road, Suite 251). Veteran picture book creator Tomie dePaola will give the Kidnote Address on Friday, Aug. 30, at 5 p.m. at Agnes Scott College’s Presser Hall (141 E. College Ave.). 

Tickets for the Keynote Address are required, free, and limited to two per person. They can be collected by visiting the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts; by calling the Arts at Emory Box Office (404.727.5050); or by visiting Tickets.Arts.Emory.edu. Phone and online orders will incur a four dollar processing fee. A limited number of tickets are also available at A Cappella Books, Charis Books & More, Eagle Eye Books, and Little Shop of Stories.

Tickets for the Kidnote Address are also required, free, and limited to two per person. They can be collected at Charis Books & More, Eagle Eye Books, and Little Shop of Stories. A limited number of tickets are also available online at  www.TicketAlternative.com/Events/24661.aspx. Online orders will incur a five dollar processing fee and a portion will go to the Decatur Education Foundation.

At the Keynote Address, John Lewis — iconic civil rights leader, Freedom Rider, United States Congressman, and Atlanta resident — will discuss his recently released graphic novel, “March: Book One,” the first in a trilogy that aims to engage the next generation of readers in the lessons of the American Civil Rights Movement. “March” is a vivid, first-hand account of Lewis’ lifelong struggle for civil and human rights. In the book, Lewis discusses the role he played as an integral leader during the March on Washington, as well as the 1965 Selma-Montgomery March. In conjunction with Lewis and co-author Andrew Aydin, acclaimed graphic novelist Nate Powell collaborated on “March” to produce an intimate depiction of one of our nation’s most pivotal moments. Together, the three explore the past, present, and future of racial relations in the United States of America. 

Tomie dePaola’s critically acclaimed Strega Nona picture books have engaged young readers for more than 35 years. At the Kidnote Address, dePaola will present his newest book — again featuring the long-beloved heroine, Strega Nona — in, “Strega Nona Does It Again.” During the event, young fans will be able to interview dePaola and a signing will immediately follow. Also at the Kidnote Address, “On the Same Page,” Decatur's community-wide reading initiative, will announce its 2013 book selection with a reading and performances by local children and actors from Synchronicity Theatre.
