The Mind-Wine Connection

The porch has afforded me many transcendent moments this summer, usually while drinking rose. You can't love wine without wondering at some point or another, how something as simple as a grape can cause so much reflection. Man has been trying to perfect grape juice since God's dog was a puppy. What in the world is so captivating about wine?

I tend to overthink things. I majored in Psychology, and I am, if anything, a Buddhist. I spend a lot of time in my head. I've been told by therapists that I suffer from "analysis paralysis," which I am working on. You'll notice that these blog posts do not occur with any regularity, because I am overthinking them, instead of writing them. Anyway, I stare into a glass of wine, and history unfolds. Aside from the desire to be intoxicated, human beings have seen fit to take this beverage to greater heights.

For me, it's all about balance. Finding balance in life is imperative for happiness. People seek therapy to find balance. The Buddha built an entire religion out of The Middle Way. Wine is the pursuit of balance in a glass, and for people who love wine, a way to measure how balanced we are as a society. As far as wine goes in the 21st century, the glass is definitely half full. There are so many interesting and well made wines popping up today, that you can't help but feel hopeful. The one word you'll hear over and over is "purity." One of my favorite importers (and writers) is Terry Theise who has a great quote: "Lots of wines, many of them good wines, let you taste the noise. But only the best let you taste the silence."

As we all look for balance in life, it's nice to know there are people out there who are trying to help us along the way. Writers, artists, musicians, even chefs and winemakers are all looking for balance. I should be clear, and say that in no way should you attempt to drink your way to Nirvana! But sometimes, when I look in that glass, I get some perspective.
