This facility is the core of many Oakhurst community events, such as Thursday Night Jazz, and is for rent for weddings, parties and other functions. The facility is a historic structure designed by renowned architect Neel Reid dating back to the 1918, when it was a polio hospital. The hospital at that time was the first in the United States devoted to the orthopedic care of children, and it served as a model for 19 Shriner's Hospitals for Crippled Children around the nation. The property is now maintained by the Community Center of South Decatur, a nonprofit organization. The organization took over the facility in 1979 and began the historic preservation of this community resource.
