Come to the Church at Decatur Heights on Saturday, March 9, if you want to meet the two candidates for the District 1 seat on Decatur City Commission. A forum and meet and greet for Greg Coleson and Scott Drake will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the church at 735 Sycamore Drive. The public is invited. If you want to run for the District 1 seat on the Decatur City Commission, the deadline to qualify is 4:30 p.m. Friday. So far only Scott Drake has signed up. To run, you need to pay the $144 qualifying fee and submit paperwork to the city clerk's office. Qualifying started Wednesday. The District 1 city commission seat has been vacant since Bill Floyd resigned Jan. 7. The commission is now operating with four members. The election is scheduled for March 19. District 1 lies mostly to the north of College Avenue.

Decatur residents interested in running for an open city commission seat can sign up 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to Friday at city hall. The candidates must file the proper papers at the city clerk's office and pay the $144 qualifying fee. They must be legal adults and have lived in District 1 for at least a year. The candidates will run March 19 in a special election to fill the District 1 city commission seat Bill Floyd held for 22 years. Floyd resigned last month to take a consulting job. Only residents of District 1 will vote in the special election. Most of the district is north of College Avenue.

A new election is on the horizon in Decatur. The city commission meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, and is expected to set a March 19 special election for the District 1 city commission post. City Manager Peggy Merriss is recommending the qualifying period be Wednesday, Feb. 13, to Friday, Feb. 15, between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day. The winner will fill the seat Bill Floyd held for 22 years. He resigned last month to take a consulting job. Floyd also served as mayor since 1995, being chosen by his peers on the commission. The winner will serve through 2015. So far, Scott Drake is the only person to announce his intention to run.
