Avondale Estates police department took a crash course in defensive driving, complete with a simulator this week. After the officers completed the program, Patch stepped in to try it out and had an accident. "For us, the straight outcome is to reduce the number of officers hurt and to safeguard the public," said Cpl. Paul Conroy with Avondale Estates Police Department. "It was about making better informed decisions while driving." Avondale's police officers are constantly on the go with thousands of calls each year. Many of them include speeding down residential or main roads with obstacles …
On Tuesday, the Avondale Tidal Waves met the Nottaway Newts in a meet at the swim and tennis club. The home team emerged victorious by a  388-354 score.
City of Decatur firefighters and rescue workers got to eat ice cream with former Decaturite Bill Mitchell, vice president of Baskin-Robbins Wednesday. Mitchell dropped in to Fire Station No. 2 with a special delivery of ice cream cake and  tubs of Firehouse #31, a red hot cinnamon and vanilla, as well as praline. The drop-in was part of Baskin-Robbins' promotion of its 31 cent ice cream night at 6,400 stores in 42 countries. The chain also donated $100,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which honors America’s fallen fire heroes and their families. Mitchell grew up on Michigan…
