The City of Decatur Active Living and Kaiser Permanente kicked off its eight-week "Get Active" program this past Thursday evening on the Decatur square. Former Olympian Jeff Galloway and Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd were on hand at the event. The “Get Active” program includes a free, eight-week fitness plan. Thursday's event will offer attendees an opportunity to visit with health and fitness businesses and professionals. The KP Corporate Run/Walk 5K will be held Thursday, September 8.
Located behind downtown Decatur's CVS, Amaryn's Thai Bowl and Sushi Bar is under new management. Looks like the restaurant will be re-opening Aug. 1, but Decatur Patch will keep trying to learn more about the new owners, menu and any other scoops we can find.
This large neighborhood collection box is a place to donate books for literacy programs around the world. Better World Books was founded in 2002 as a company that sold textbooks online. Since then, the company has been hosting book drives and collecting used books and textbooks through its network of college campuses and libraries. To date, it has converted more than 42 million books into almost $9 million in funding for literacy and education programs. McDonald's downtown Decatur location is advertising its expanded weekend store hours. Looks like from Thursday through Saturday, the location will be open 24 hours a day.
Friday was Cow Appreciation Day at Chick-fil-A restaurants throughout the nation, and the company's downtown Decatur's store was filled with families and customers dressed as their favorite bovines, as part of the restaurant's free-food promotion. Chick-fil-A executives Truett and Dan Cathy also made a special appearance at the location.
The first Peachtree Road Race started at Georgia State University in 1970 with about 100 participants, many of whom were students. Dean Tim Singleton (with the bullhorn) started the first race. He had it on July 4th because there was little traffic in Atlanta on that day. Several years later, the Atlanta Track Club sponsored the event. Thanks for Avondale Estates resident Denise Forrester for sending us this photo from the GSU archives. She told Decatur Patch that she started running the Peachtree in 1990 and ran it for more than 10 years.And her sister and children still participate.
The building that formerly housed McKinney's Apothecary on Church Street, near Commerce Drive, was torn down on Wednesday.

Oakhurst Market, slated for the center of Oakhurst, is now under construction. When the market opens, it will have locally grown produce when available, plus meats and a culled selection of grocery products.
