“I do it to honor my mom,” explains Leslie as to why she is so passionate about breast cancer awareness. Her mom was diagnosed 11 years ago and is cancer free today. Also, Leslie’s aunt and cousin have been diagnosed and have won their fights against breast cancer. So when a girlfriend asked her to join her team in 2005 and walk in the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, Leslie couldn’t help but say yes.
Celebrating ten years this October, The Atlanta 2-Day Walk has generated more than $8 million for 169 grants to breast health programs throughout Georgia that provide screening and diagnosis, treatment education, and support services. The endurance walk is produced by It’s The Journey, a local organization which is proud to state that all of the money raised here, stays here in Georgia.
Leslie has been involved with the Atlanta 2-Day for seven years. “It’s a great way to honor the survivors in our family,” says Leslie. “It brings us all together in a healthy way and is a way for us to give back to the Atlanta community.” Her team, Team Boobie-Que, consists of herself, her husband, her sister, her brother-in-law, and four or five other friends. The team’s name definitely gives their fundraiser away. Leslie’s husband is a chef and they sell delicious barbeque to raise money for the 2-Day. Leslie says that they have numerous fundraisers throughout the year, such as yard sales, and sell their barbeque to people stopping by.
Individuals or teams can participate in the Atlanta 2-Day Walk, which covers 30 miles over two days, with each walker responsible for raising $1,000.
Leslie describes the Atlanta 2-Day as “a positive way to experience Atlanta.” She says that if you want a way to spend time with people you love and make new friends, then “the Atlanta 2-Day should definitely be on your bucket list.”
