The old James Joyce Irish Pub in Avondale Estates is now called the Brewhouse Cafe Avondale.

For the fourth time in four months, the sign and the name have changed for a popular bar in Avondale Estates. It's now, officially, the Brewhouse Cafe Avondale.

Most people around here remember the place as the James Joyce Irish Pub, which opened in 2002. The name changed last October to the Hail Mary Sports Bar when new management took over.

That deal fell through after a few months. Owner Denise Gerard stepped back in,  adopted the name Avondale Arms for a brief period and changed the sign again.

The new name, Brewhouse Cafe Avondale, is a nod to her other bar, the Brewhouse Cafe at Little Five Points.

I still say we don't need yet another business with "cafe" in the name. We already have Our Way Cafe and the Avondale Pizza Cafe. The coat of arms does give the sign a bit of class. However, "bar" has a conotation of rowdy drunks and ladies of the evening which is not in keeping witha familypfriendly establishment. It also saysits focus is on consumption of alchohol, which also conflicts with a family-friendly image. Yes, It's fine to serve the adults their adult beverages in family freindly establishments, but that shouldn't be the main focus in a place to which you take the kids. I've been back several times since the last name change, and the food has improved greatly, thanks to bringing back most of the James Joyce's menu and presumably some of its kitchen staff. Nobody is being served on the terrace any more, and the gas-log fireplaces are cold. Maybe it would help warm up the me-too-sports atmosphere if the "homefires" were kept burning.

Not being a huge sports fan cools my interest, but with so few places to visit for a beer here in Avondale, I'm willing to try it again. Mainly, my reason for this comment is to encourage that terrace use again. It's much easier to hear conversation out there than inside.

We love the Brewhouse in Little Five, especially the terrace. Cutting down on the smoking atmosphere would help at both.

In addition to the TMS Spirit night, Marynell Meadors the Head Coach for the Atlanta Dream and the Dream's Mascot Star will be present that night. Should be a blast, with lots of team giveaways and fun for the family. Ms Meadors was recently named an assistant coach to the USA's Women's Olympic Basketball team.
