Storytelling Comes To Eddie's Attic

'Stories on the Square' will convene at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday

Shannon McNeal sent Patch an email about "Stories on the Square," an open mic event at which anybody can tell their personal story.

"Stories on the Square" starts at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at in Decatur. No cover charge.

For a taste of what you might hear, go to Virginia Highlands Patch and hear McNeal tell a story last fall at a similar event held at Manuel's Tavern.

Patch asked McNeal how the Eddie's Attic event came about and she told us this story.

The event is a spin off from "Stories on the Edge of Night" a late-night personal storytelling performance during of the Southern Order of Storytellers that happened in February 2012 in downtown Decatur.

Our first show was March 15th and we had about 50 people in attendance.  As a part of the 30th Annual festival of SOS, Stories on the Edge of Night was hosted graciously by Eddie's Attic and Eddie's Attic was interested in starting a monthly storytelling event, so here we are!

One way to think about personal storytelling, which is what we do, is that we love to tell on ourselves. This is an open mic performance.  Anyone can tell a personal story, but you are not required to tell a story to attend.

The guidelines are simple. It must be a true personal story, no longer than 7 minutes. There is no theme and everyone gets to tell. Stories are told until we finish or Eddie's Attic closes.

The event is the first Tuesday of every month. We gather together at Eddie's Attic starting at 7:30 p.m. and tell until we are done. There is no cover charge.

Free parking is available at the DeKalb County Courthouse parking deck at the corner of Commerce Dr. and West Trinity Place. Ignore the sign that states parking costs $6.00 as the deck is opened to the public for free after 6:00 p.m.
