Spiffy Halls, Shiny Floors at The 4/5 Academy

Decatur's newest school will be ready for the start of the school year on Aug. 2.

Decatur's newest school is close to being ready for the Aug. 2 start of the school year.

The is the first new school built in Decatur since Renfroe Middle School in 1972. It will serve fourth and fifth graders from throughout the city's school system.

The new building replaces the old Fifth Avenue Elementary, which sat empty for the past few years.

The Academy will be part of the International Baccalaureate Program, which offers a curriculum that is seen a much more rigorous than those offerd by most public schools.

The official ribbon-cutting will be held on Sunday, July 31, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. The public can tour the building during that time.

Here are some fast facts about the new school:

  • Student population projected for next year: 460
  • Classrooms: 10 fourth grade homerooms, nine fifth grade homerooms
  • New building can hold 600 students
  • Three floors and a mezzanine between the first and second floors
  • First floor – offices, media center, cafeteria, science room, art room
  • Mezzanine – multipurpose room (600 seats) with stage, 2/3 basketball court
  • Second floor – music room and classrooms for fourth and fifth grades
  • Third floor – classrooms for fourth and fifth grades
  • Outside facilities: Amphitheater – outdoor classroom
  • Active oval – for future playground equipment
  • Gardens – in cooperation with Oakhurst Community Gardens
