Photo Gallery: Veterans Day At St. Thomas More Catholic School

Students honored current and former members of the military.

St. Thomas More Catholic School celebrated Veterans Day on Friday. Jeff Kosmerl of Avondale Estates took some photos and his wife, Suzanne, described the events.

Father Kevin Peek, U.S. Army Chaplain, now chaplain at the Catholic Center at Georgia Institute of Technology, was the keynote speaker of St. Thomas More’s Veterans Day assembly.

Father Peek spoke of how during his last year in Afghanistan he often spent only once every two weeks in his own bed. He had to catch sleep in the truck during all hours of the day while being driven between bases and encampments, where he advised men and women of all faiths, branches of the military and nationalities.

He counseled young military men and women on the streets of Afghanistan who understood that a split second decision would have worldwide ramifications.

He closed by speaking of all the great recruitment commercials of the Army – Be All That You Can Be, An Army of One – as well as the recent, great USMC advertisements. He made a suggestion for a new commercial: vignettes of people enjoying family, friends and freedom with the tagline: “These moments brought to you by the U.S. military.”
