Sandy Springs Blocks Rumored Walmart

The North Fulton city passed a moratorium on large commercial buildings.

A battle raged in Decatur and North DeKalb over plans to build a Walmart, but a North Fulton city is trying to stop the fight before it even starts.

The Sandy Springs City Council just approved a moratorium on big box stores, apparently after hearing rumors a Walmart might be built there, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

While there is no indication a Walmart store is coming, the possibility spurred the city to do something. Sandy Springs officials used the 90-day moratorium to address a possible loophole between the zoning code and the city’s 2027 comprehensive plan, which prohibits large commercial developments in the town center district.

Meanwhile, back in DeKalb County, , an aging shopping center just outside the Decatur city limits.

and can move ahead with renovating the shopping center, with the Walmart as the anchor store.

Residents of neighborhoods near the shopping center, , worried about the effect of the development, saying it would increase traffic congestion.
