Glenlake Park renovations include new dog park, two multi-purpose sports fields, resurfaced tennis courts and new picnic pavilion.

Decatur residents care most about schools and pets, according to Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd.

Saturday, Floyd officially dedicated the Glenlake Park renovation, which cost $3.27 million and took about a year to complete and includes a dog park and playgrounds.

"I don't get to declare much, but I declare the renovated Glenlake Park to be dedicated," quipped Floyd. Saturday was National Kids to Parks Day, a movement organized by the National Park Trust to encourage kids to get out and play in the nation's parks.

Landscape architectural firm jB+a, Inc., of Atlanta designed the renvoation which included a new dog park, a new picnic pavilion, two multi-use athletic fields, a new bridge over the park's creek, a .46 mile walking path, and resurfacing the tennis courts.

According to the city's master plan, the Glenlake Tennis Center will be relocated to another site within the city, because the Glenlake courts are within city and state stream buffers, are on an existing natural spring, and, because they're on unstable soils, are consequently unsustainable. However, the two courts in the best condition will remain.

Thanks for this great article about the dedication of Glenlake Park this past weekend. I want to make a clarification about the tennis center in the park master plan. While the "Future" master plan does indicate removal of three of the tennis courts, this would not happen without replacements courts being available first. Also, during the course of park construction monies became available to renovate the existing five tennis courts playing surface, fencing and lighting (which wasn't in the original budget). The new tennis court surface is designed to last 25 years or more, so it's not likely that the city will not be removing them for a very long time.
