Obama To Visit Decatur Thursday

The President will stop at the College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center.

President Obama will visit the College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center in Decatur on Thursday during his visit to the Atlanta area.

The visit was announced Friday with few details, but College Heights Principal Suzanne Kennedy sent a note to parents about the President's plans to drop into the school at 917 S. McDonough St., according to Decatur Metro.

The time for the President's visit has not been announced.

No classes will be held for pre-K through 12th grade students in the City Schools of Decatur Monday-Friday because of winter break, but the 0-3 Tuition Program at College Heights will operate, according to an email from the school. Some readers say pre-K will meet at the school that day, too.

Obama gives his state of the union address Tuesday night in Washington, D.C. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Obama will visit Asheville, N.C., on Wednesday before stopping in the Atlanta area.

According to the City Schools of Decatur website,

The College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center (CHECLC) is a City Schools of Decatur public school that serves 357 children ages 6 weeks to pre-Kindergarten.  Nine lottery-funded pre-Kindergarten classes are included in this center as well as the early childhood special education program for the City Schools of Decatur.  College Heights ECLC works in partnership with Partnership for Community Action (PCA), Inc. (http://www.pcaction.org/).  As a quality program, we strive to provide high-quality, literacy-rich preschool experiences that are intentionally taught by well-prepared and knowledgeable staff.  We hold our program accreditation through the Southern Association of College and Schools (SACS).

Your article indicates that the school is closed all week. Actually, I think that the youngest children classes are mot on any break. I know that the three year old classes are meeting all week and are not on break. I'm not certain about the four-year-old with a pre-K classes but at least the younger children are already going to be there all week.

Yes the Pre-K classes will come to school that day. Obama will be giving a speech about the benefits of lottery funded Pre-K, so it makes sense for him to visit CHELC, one of the biggest and best in the metro area and part of one of the most successful school systems.
