Update: Decatur Police Clarify Statement on Alleged Sexual Assault
Decatur police say the investigation is closed.
Update: Keith Lee, Decatur's assistant police chief, on Thursday clarified information released recently about an alleged sexual assault on Halloween night in Winnona Park.
When asked if a crime had been committed, Lee explained in a telephone interview: "The evidence that we gathered in our investigation did not warrant criminal charges."
Lee said he couldn't elaborate on the advice of lawyers.
Lee said officers spent many hours investigating the case and talked to numerous witnesses. The department moved deliberately and didn't release much information because most of the witnesses were minors.
Here's the earlier version of the story.
Decatur police say they've closed their investigation and will file no charges in the alleged sexual assault of a juvenile on Halloween night at a sports field behind Winnona Park Elementary School.
Because the case involved juveniles, police have not released much information about the case.
The statement below, released by Assistant Chief Keith Lee in response to a question from Decatur Patch, is the department's first since initial reports on the incident.
The City of Decatur Police Department has completed its investigation into the alleged sexual assault that occurred on Halloween night. Investigators interviewed many people during this investigation. The number of people present at or around the alleged incident and the fact they were juveniles required a significant length of time to properly conduct the interviews.
At the beginning and during the investigation, we consulted with the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office and the DeKalb County Juvenile Court. After reviewing all evidence, it was determined that no criminal charges would be pursued in this case. The investigation into this complaint has been closed.
