Got Secrets?

Artist Jes Schrom set up boxes and is collecting secrets from around metro Atlanta, including in Dancing Goats in Decatur, and will use them as a public art project this fall.

Have you been holding an intimate secret for years that you've always wanted to reveal?

Well, now is your chance.

Artist Jes Schrom is collecting the peoples'  deepest, darkest secrets and will use them as a public art installation next fall.

The idea: write down your secret and leave it behind in one of the many drop boxes around metro Atlanta, including in Dancing Goats Coffee Bar on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Decatur.

While all secrets will remain anonymous, Schrom will be happy to tell all. She will reveal people's private desires, past loves and other moments, future plans and other secrets. They will be displayed on tri-fold paper towels in public restrooms, likely at Dancing Goats, starting in September.

"It's speaking to all the information we get and how it's disposable," Schrom said. "It's giving people a public-private dichotomy. We want people to encounter art where they never expect it."

The art installation is part of Flux Projects, a nonprofit that supports artists in creating innovative temporary public art throughout the Atlanta area.

Secrets are already arriving in boxes delivered to Schrom's doorstep.

"It's way more than I expected," said Schrom, who also serves as an assistant professor of photography at Louisiana Tech University.

Though she hasn't done an exact count of the number of secrets collected so far, she said, "I expect it's going to be in the thousands."

Frank Warren of Germantown, Md., has popularized the art of telling secrets anonymously. He launched a community mail art project PostSecret.com in 2005, where people sent in their secrets on postcards. He also set up a blog where he records them.

Schrom's work is described as that of combining humor with heartache, intimacy with detachment, destruction with regret on the Flux Projects website.

Visit Dancing Goats now through May to drop your secret in the box inside the coffee shop. Or hit up one of the other locations around metro Atlanta: Aurora Coffee in Virginia Highlands, The Flying Biscuit Café in Buckhead, Octane Coffee, west of downtown, and the roaming Good Food Truck.
