Former DeKalb Police Officer Charged With Vehicular Homicide

A DeKalb County Grand Jury has indicted Kristina Hambie, 25, a former DeKalb County Police Officer, in the deaths of two women in Avondale Estates.
According to DeKalb County records and Reporter Newspapers, Hambie was charged Oct. 4 with several counts of vehicular homicide, reckless driving and oath of a public officer for killing friends Cheryl Blount-Burton and Shelley Amos.
The Feb. 19 incident occurred on Covington Highway and Kensington Road.
District Attorney Robert James of DeKalb County said in a release that Hambie was traveling in excess of 30 miles over the posted speed limit in her police cruiser when it collided with Blount-Burton's white Nissan Altima.
“Two people lost their lives because of the actions of Kristina Hambie,” said James.
Hambie, a City of Decatur resident, surrendered herself to authorities and was released on $50,000 bond, according to Fox 5.

It seems as though this story isn't getting much media attention at all because Hambie was a law enforcement officer. I've yet to see any real attention given to Blount-Burton and Amos. Does anyone have photos of them? Who are their survivors? What did they love? What did they do? How do their families feel about the fact that Hambie was just enjoying a joy-ride, protected by her badge and squad car, when she killed them?
Should anything be changed in the way police officers are recruited and changed? I've long had the impression that far too many officers are just people who love being able to drive fast, powerful cars and push people around. I realize that there are many good law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line for the public, but there are too many like Hambie on power trips who endanger the public instead of protecting us.

Cynthia -- you have no idea what you're talking about, and you should be ashamed of yourself. Citizens perish in motor vehicle accidents daily by the HUNDREDS. You'll never see the victims covered in any great detail because it has become so commonplace. Come on. Blount-Burton and Amos weren't the only people to die that day in an accident involving vehicles. What -- should the local news stations now dedicate the first minutes of each daily broadcast to name and show photos of the deceased? The only reason that YOU commented what you did is because of the involvement of a law enforcement officer. Had the three people involved here been drug dealers, drunk college students, or anything of that nature, I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't be complaining as much. As for Officer Hambie being on a power trip, you couldn't be more wrong. Wow. It's because of ignorant idiots on one side and biased people such as yourself on the on the other side that our society continues to devolve into chaos.

Its because law enforcement (local authorities release all the police news to the media) If this police officer was under the influence of alcohol he should have been charged with felony Manslaughter...also if he had his firearm on him and it was loaded he is again guilty of another felony...thats 2 felonies... Its a shame but I would have had the book thrown at me both charges are felonies I would be going away for a long time..Because I am not privelidged law enforcement and do not have the equal protections of the law...This is why I have not had not even 1 beer in over 25 years its just to dangerous.. Plus I am a veteran so thats another strike againbst me because I was not an officer just an honorably discharged army infantry weapons platoon a team member...
