Decatur To Hold Annexation Info Session Dec. 3
The Decatur Commission and the Decatur School Board will hold important meetings in the annexation process in upcoming weeks.
The City of Decatur is in the final stages of deciding whether to move ahead with annexing about 2,000 people into the city.
Upcoming dates in the process.
- Monday, Dec. 3. Decatur Commission to hold a a final information meeting on annexation.
- Wednesday, Dec. 5. The Decatur School Board will hold a 5:30 p.m. work session and hear an update on numerical projections based on annexation.
- Tuesday, Dec. 11. The Decatur School Board is expected to make a recommendation to the Decatur Commission about annexation.
- Monday, Dec. 17. The Decatur Commission is scheduled to decide whether to move ahead with annexation. The commission would have to ask legislators to pass a bill allowing a referendum in November 2013.

My advice is not to decide this during the holiday when residents either are not around or have their attention directed elsewhere. Decatur usually places a premium on resident input, and resident input will be at its LOWEST on Dec 17. This is too important, and there is no rush. The City has not even release any financial projections yet.

Judd, not taking sides here, but the city has said a decision must be made by mid-December to get the legislature involved in early 2013, in case a referendum must be set. Do you think that's a good argument?

Why does the legislature need to be involved in early 2013? What would the bad consequence of waiting be? What exactly is the argument?
There IS, however, a strong argument for waiting--the opportunity for the public to review the still unreleased financial projections and provide feedback to the board.

I say we get the nonsense over with, out of mind and off the radar so we can all go about our lives for the holidays. Putting an end to this annexation nightmare would be the best gift for so many. Personally, I can't wait for Monday's meeting so I can, perhaps, get a response to my letter to City Manager P. Merriss challenging her to validate some ill-gotten signatures on a pro-annexation petition. Haven't heard a peep from her about it, unfortunately.
