Craft Beer Ordinance On Agenda

The Decatur City Commission will vote on amending the zoning ordinance to allow craft beer brewing.

It looks like a big step will be taken Monday night for two local craft beer breweries, Three Taverns and Blue Tarp Brewing.

Both want to brew beer around around East Decatur Station. The problem: The city discovered local zoning ordinances didn't include a brewing category.

To fix that, the City of Decatur is rewriting the zoning ordinance.

The proposed change, to be voted on at 7:30 p.m. tonight by the Decatur City Commission, would allow the creation of up to 200,000 barrels a year. For comparison purposes, the city says Sweetwater Brewery in Atlanta produces about 100,000 yearly.

The change would establish a license category for the manufacture of beer in the C-3 commercial district under certain conditions and establish a license fee for the manufacture of beer.

City Manager Peggy Merriss is recommending the change be approved.
