Avondale Estates Officer Involved in Shooting
The shooting reportedly occurred after police pursued a suspect, who wrecked his vehicle. The man got out of his vehicle and struggled with the officer, who shot the man, authorities said.
The GBI has been called in to investigate after an Avondale Estates police officer shot a suspect Friday night.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Contitution,
A witness told Channel 2 the officer was chasing a suspect when the suspect wrecked his vehicle near the 3100 block of Kingsington Road between Stratford and Lakeshore.
The witness said the suspect got out of his vehicle after the Avondale Estates officer ordered him to stay inside. The witness said the two then struggled and the officer allegedly shot the suspect in the chest.
Neither the suspect or the officer have been identified.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation also investigated in July 2011 after Avondale Estates police officer Emilio Quintana shot and killed Randall Hill, 26, of Avondale Estates after a struggle in the woods behind Avondale Pattillo United Methodist Church.
No charges were filed against the officer.
Editor's note: The AJC spelled it Kingsington Road, but it's really Kensington Road.

Isn't it too early to make a link to a shotting that ocurred over a year ago? A hint of sensationalism?

Paul, I mentioned the other shooting because Avondale Estates is a small town. To have two officer-related shootings in that length of time is work noting.

Is it interesting that there have been two cases of police shooting suspects in a one and half year span, sure. Ralph, other interesting item is that while AE is such a small town there seems to be a growing amount of crime being waged on AE residents through car and home burglary from external threats. Threats that a small town and small police force need to burden. More interestingly this is the second high speed reckless drive through (read stolen cars) of AE since April 2012 (that one ended up with the car being driven into a tree catching fire while the suspect fled on foot). I think AE PD is responding appropriately to these external threats brought into the neighborhood by nearby communities.

Does anyone know how long it takes for the victim to be identified? We believe we know him and are unsuccessful in getting any answers from the police, GBI, hospital or medical examiners.

I find it very interesting that there have been two shootings in a years time from such a small police department. Sounds like this department shoots first and thinks last. So no... the good guys did not win this time!!!! Someone lost their life here. A brother, child, uncle, friend. If I had a guy and someone was fighting with me, I am going to unload the gun not just one bullet. Something stinks here!!

Concerned Parent says:" Someone lost their life here." I did not know the perpetrator was killed?? I thought he was transported via ambulance to the hospital. Concerned Parent says: "....someone was fighting with me, I am going to unload the gun not just one bullet." GOSH,YOU would give the police a bad name!! As I understand the COP was knocked to the ground and jumped on by the crook. The COP shot him during the scuffle. The COP got to go home virtually unharmed while the bandit went to the hospital. That is a good day in my book and certainly the GOOD GUYS WIN!!

Contented-NOT you obvious have no clue on what you are talking about and should do more research before you blog. Yes, the BOY was killed and YES the police have a bad name. NO the cop was NOT knocked to the ground and jumped on by the BOY not crook. The COP went home and is able to wake up another day and the BOY that he shot and KILLED does not. So if you call the trigger happy sorry cop a good guy, then you may need to get a new book to live by. Two lives in less than two years?? Someone needs to do some house cleaning in that precinct because they have no clue on how to do their job. What if it were your family member or friend? I bet you would have something else to say!! (BTW...I know the BOY!)

How is it Concerned Parent that you have such a different view of what happened? Plenty of AE residents were privy of the encounter and this "boy" , as you call him, was not as innocent as you proclaim. Perhaps you're relying on what you wish had happened rather than what did. You also seem very concerned about his life and his relationships as "a brother, child, uncle, friend" but where is your concern about the countless lives he endangered by driving a reportedly stolen car at reckless speed to himself and others? This individual acted unwisely and recklessly and disobeyed orders from a police officer. Police officers are there to protect all from the dangerous and unlawful. Police respond in force with force. If the crook had listened and followed the officers commands, he would still be living today. His death is his own doing through all of his actions that Friday. I commend the AE police for professionally responding to a threat.

The guy was 20, yes he came after the officer, "small Police Department yes" in the middle of a huge area of thugs, get the story straight...Good officer...sad for everyone.. but people are clueless!!! Take your citizens academy training and you will learn to think before you speak...And I'm sorry this man made a bad choice...we have all done that and thankfully lived to see another day. Too bad for all involved. AND remember Avondale is in the middle of Dekalb and one of the best things their Chief knows and pushes is Training, Training, Training. And if you knew the boy then why this behavior that started his road to negativity?

Oh my gosh, I guess you are right I originally thought the policeman shot a CAR THIEF not a child. So sorry. I confess that I did not do any research other than hear what an eye witness said; if your knowledge is a result of being an eye witness you should come forward especially with the description of a child being shot instead of a nasty, car steeling, reckless driving, uninsured car thief that physically knocked a policeman down on the ground before he was shot. I guess the policeman should have to pay for the damages to the cars, yards, power equipment, ambulance, hospital services, GBI, FBI, DeKalb PD, and all other involved costs? If the perpetrator was a friend or relative I would be disgraced I suppose, how about you?

Yes. The perp committed a traffic violation and the police ran the tag. It was stolen from a package store on Covington Hwy.

Did the COP need to know more than the perp disobeyed the stay in the car order and that the perp knocked him to the ground ? At that point I would think the stolen car would be a far away thought.
Steve

The officer did not need to know that the car was stolen in order to initiate a traffic stop if the perp violated a traffic law, which he did.

"Concerned Parent", your post demonstrates that you have NO idea what really happened, and you are merely pulling things out of your ass based on your obviously biased OPINIONS.
I was an eyewitness to this event, and I can tell you with COMPLETE confidence and authority that this suspect DID physically attack the officer, after careening and crashing through a neighborhood full of elderly people and children (including my own), almost hitting my car, smashing a telephone pole, skidding through a neighbor's yard, crashing into another neighbor's car, then blatantly disobeying the officer's repeated orders to stay in his car, then disobeying orders to get back in his car (the officer even said "please" and "sir")....
This man was clearly a danger to everyone in the area, he had already put countless innocent people in harm's way, and he DID clearly and indisputably physically attack the officer.
This shooting was 100% justified and unavoidable. The officer was given no choice but to defend his own life. You have no clue what you're talking about, you were not there when it happened, and I respectfully suggest that you stop spreading misinformation about an event that you did not witness.
