Two Women Robbed on Downtown Decatur Street
Decatur police said two men, one of them carrying a pistol, robbed two women a block off West Ponce de Leon Avenue.
Two women walking along a downtown Decatur side street were robbed Thursday night by two men, one of them carrying a pistol, Decatur police reported.
The robbery happened about 8:30 p.m. Thursday on Ponce De Leon Place near Montgomery Street, about a block off West Ponce de Leon Avenue. The police report gave this account:
The women were walking north when two males approached from behind. The first suspect asked for the time and the women said they didn't have it. The second suspect stood in front to prevent them from advancing and the first suspect told them to "Drop everything." He held a revolver with a long barrel.
The women dropped their purses and the suspects asked, "Where are the phones?" The women said in the purses and the suspects fled through the Commerce Plaza parking lot.
Both suspects were described as black males with medium/dark complexions. The suspect who held the pistol was in his late teens to early twenties with no facial hair. He was 5-foot-9 to 6 feet with a lean build and wore a black hooded jacket and jeans. The other suspect was in his mid to late teens, about 5-foot-5 and wearing a dark gray jacket and a black skull cap.
Listed as stolen were two purses, three phones, some credit and debit cards, cash, wallets and forms of ID.

We need to declare war on thugs. Why does society accept we have an entire segment of the population that is fatherless, ignorant, and incapable of taking care of themselves? Why do law abiding and productive citizens accept paying taxes to support these people through welfare or prison?

This is tragic, I hope those ladies are ok. Surveillance cameras, too. They won't prevent crime, necessarily, but they may help to catch the perpetrators of it.

Here's a new idea: HIRE A COPY EDITOR. I am so tired of the ridiculous, sloppy writing and editing on the "Patch" columns.. today you have ".. robbed two women a block of West Ponce de Leon Avenue. " Did you mean "off of West Ponce" perchance?

Decatur PD has a wireless surveillance camera system that they got for free. It has cameras at the Square, MARTA, plus another 60 or so at DHS. It is possible to expand this. If they were up and down Ponce, Trinity and some other streets it would be a great start.

It's an unfortunate thing, but it seems like it is very safe to walk at night, and day time does not prove to be to safe either.
Seems like people have to start carrying some type of protection just like the assailant

Yes, Ebony, the protection we carry could be a mind that doesn't pre-judge entire groups of people based on the acts of just a few. I'm glad nobody was hurt & I am quite sure that the perpetrators will be caught if they keep doing the same stupid stuff.

Brett- what does fatherless have to do with it?
I am a single parent (it's not a disease) - I am not married- and I take care of my own child - I am not on public assistance and I work (and I have rental property I pay someone to manage) Seriously- Just because someone is unmarried - don't assume the worst- these thugs (and I agree they are thugs) are just the result of poor parenting - period! I and my son volunteer regularly and are both productive members of society (a result of parenting)... and guess what? Both of my parents are deceased - so I guess I am the result of a motherless & fatherless home.

Stats don't lie. But neither do they tell the whole story.
When I see a scary 'thug' on the street my first though is disdain. Its only natural. But recently I try to think back. That was a little defenseless kid just 10 years ago. But as a result of his upbringing he grew up to become a predator. Or a homeless - no family nobody that people don't want to be near.
Something is broken...needs fixing. Not ignore. Our present course does not work. We must do something to stop the cycle.
What came first? The bum and poverty? Or poverty and the bum.
