Participants Needed for American Cancer Society Prevention Study
Decatur Family YMCA is Enrollment Site
The American Cancer Society is looking for men and women ages 30 to 65 to enroll in the Society’s historic Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3). The American Cancer Society is partnering with the YMCA of Metro Atlanta for enrollment. The Decatur Family YMCA, located at 1100 Clairemont Ave., will hold enrollment appointments Friday, March 15, 2013, from 7 – 11 a.m.
“By partnering with the YMCA to provide locations for CPS-3 enrollment, we are making it as easy as possible for Atlanta residents to take part in this life-changing study,” says Randy Redner, the American Cancer Society’s vice president for Georgia.
Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from a series of American Cancer Society studies that began in the 1950s, and will help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.
Program participants must be between the ages of 30 and 65, who have never been diagnosed with cancer. They must be willing to commit long-term to the study, which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically for the next 20 to 30 years. The Society is seeking to enroll 5,000 Atlanta-area residents and 300,000 people total.
The enrollment process involves three steps. The first step is to schedule an appointment online at www.cps3atlanta.com.
The next step is to go to the scheduled appointment, held at the local Y, where an informed consent form will be signed, a brief written survey completed, a waist circumference measurement and a small blood sample (similar to a doctor’s visit – 7 teaspoons total) taken. The blood sample will be taken by a certified, trained phlebotomist.
The final step takes place at home, where a more detailed survey will be completed. This survey asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral and health-related factors.
“Most people know someone affected by cancer,” says Bill McKoy, executive director of the Decatur Family YMCA. “Enrolling in this national study is one small but very significant action that could help prevent or cure cancer for loved ones
and others.”
